INFINITE RHYTHM

“Flight of the Bumble Bee” buzzes its speedy course along the keys of the marimba as audiences learn through skillful percussion displays. Brian Slawson brings his talented trio to the School Series for a lively look at communication, rhythm, and percussion. From behind his marimba, this Columbia recording artist directs his ensemble while teaching students musical essentials like counting, rhythmic placement, and syncopation. Volunteers will create their own stories through live percussion on stage with the artists.

PAINTED SOUND

Just as an artist paints with colors, a string quartet paints with sounds. The Attacca Quartet paints a vivid musical canvas before your very eyes! Drawing connections from the musical arts to the visual arts using parallels of color, texture, technique and structure, they illustrate how a piece of music is put together. Call and response, student participation, and colorful visual aids reinforce this connection. Join the virtuosic Juilliard Graduate Resident String Quartet and help them paint a beautiful musical picture!

Grammy Nominees Dave Eggar and Chuck Palmer bring their band DEORO together with Hammerstep for an electrified take on Irish Step Dance. Comprised of award winning dancers and Riverdance veterans from Irish Step and Hip Hop traditions, this show casts technology, dance, and live musical performance in a whole new light. The New York-based Ologundê ensemble presents the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador, Bahia through music and movement. Directed by acclaimed percussionist Dende, members of renowned music and dance troupes combine talents in Ologundê’s popular productions. Students will be introduced to cornerstones of Brazilian culture such as the orixais of candomble, the breathtaking martial arts dance capoeira, and the exhilarating samba de roda with its roots in Angola. SLAM 102: VERBAL VELOCITY

Students witness and participate in today’s coolest performing arts scene in New York City: the Open Mic Poetry Slam. Moving beyond the popular Slam 101, Slam 102 introduces the Ekphrastic Poem, the Personification Poem, and the Narrative Poem to novice wordsmiths who create original works on the spot. Students and teachers become judges for a live competition between a talented and dynamic poet-performance team directed by Cecilia Rubino and featuring masterful poets Darian Dauchan, Erik Maldonado, and Shanelle Gabriel as D.J. Jenna spins the beat. Join in the fun and decide which poet will be the last one standing.

Inspired by Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and vaudeville theatre, Mario the Magician is at once ridiculously silly and meticulously crafted. He has performed for The New York Times, Discovery Communications, and FAO Schwarz. Mario performs and invents a variety of magic tricks, fostering creativity and allowing grades K-2 to discover their own artistic spirit in a fun, accessible atmosphere. Mario's performance will be accompanied by his "Sleight of Hand Band," led by platinum-selling songwriter and bassist Chris Donohue.

An invisible wind sets Gregg Goldston’s umbrella afloat—and suddenly we’re in a place where the laws of physics are forgotten. In this world of mime, invisible people and places come to life right before your eyes. Sesame Street regular and Marcel Marceau mentee Gregg Goldston is the premiere mime soloist in the world today, renowned for his graceful and meticulous choreography. Louder than Words takes grades K-2 on hilarious adventures from a hat stuck in mid-air and three quarreling jazz musicians to a lonely man awaiting true love. Student volunteers join him on stage to try out some trademark moves of physical movement. Experience a show where the imagination runs wild!

Princesses, heroes, and villains aren’t only found in storybooks…they are also found on Broadway! Many familiar children’s stories have been produced as award-winning Broadway musicals including Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, and Shrek. Audience favorite Teri Dale Hansen brings the fairy tales of Broadway to Meet the Artist for grades K-2. Students and teachers participate and sing along to cherished songs, create a five-minute fairy tale, and move to the music in this fairy tale exploration.
