Week-Long Activities Include a Residency with NYC Music Students, Open Rehearsals, Pop-Up Performances,
and a Concert on August 6 in Damrosch Park
July 16, 2021 — Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts today announced that the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and Renée and Robert Belfer Music Director Louis Langrée will return to campus for the first time since the pandemic for a residency with students from New York City area music schools from August 1–7, 2021. The week of activities culminates with a concert in Damrosch Park featuring Langrée conducting Mozart’s first and final symphonies with the MMFO and several of the students.
As part of Lincoln Center’s mission to create authentic and meaningful connections to the arts and help inspire the next generation of artists, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra partnered with music schools across several boroughs last summer to provide access and mentorship in a time when live interaction wasn’t possible. The Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra’s community engagement collaborations have included virtual lessons and masterclasses, and virtual performances.
Leading up to the concert, the week includes open rehearsals, pop-up performances, and recitals for the students with members of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra as part of their ongoing collaborations with City music schools and programs.
The week-long residency in August marks the first time Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra musicians will perform together in two years, due to the pandemic, and the first time the students and their mentors will meet in person—offering students the rare opportunity to rehearse and perform side-by-side with professional musicians.
Participating schools and programs include Union City Music Project; UpBeat NYC in the Bronx; Orchestrating Dreams; Harmony Program; the Corona Youth Music Project, the first El Sistema inspired program in Queens; Chamber Music Center of New York, BridgeMusik, and Harlem School of the Arts.
“Music has the power to heal, elevate and unite us,” said Louis Langrée. “Mozart addresses to us a universal message for humanity, and the Jupiter Symphony will echo the overwhelming joy our Orchestra will feel performing together for our beloved and devoted audience for the very first time after two years of silence, after such a challenging time away. We cannot wait!”
All programs are free and presented as part of Restart Stages, the outdoor performing arts center constructed on Lincoln Center’s campus to champion the revival of New York City. Performance on August 6 to be livestreamed.
Restart Stages is a program of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation-Lincoln Center Agora Initiative with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), which activates outdoor space through artistic and community initiatives that speak to our current moment, and reimagines cultural engagement in public space for a new era. The transatlantic exhibition, Faces of the Hero, a partnership with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) will be on view beginning in July.
Since the pandemic began, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts has driven efforts to bring the power of the arts to New Yorkers outdoors and digitally—from Love From Lincoln Center concerts for individual essential workers to works of art that elevate the voices and lived experiences of people of color in America, such as Carrie Mae Weems’ installation Resist COVID/Take 6!, Davóne Tines’ Vigil, and digital commissions like The Baptism by Carl Hancock Rux. Future Stavros Niarchos Foundation-Lincoln Center Agora Initiative international collaborations with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens (SNFCC) will bring new approaches to cultural engagement in both cities. These are just the beginning of a reorientation towards prioritizing openness, access, and inclusive excellence – elevating talent from every corner of the globe and fostering a sense of radical welcome on the campus.

Open Rehearsals and Performances
Every day from August 1-5, members of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and area educators will meet to teach and play with students from around New York City from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in various outdoor locations across campus. The rehearsals will culminate in recitals on The GREEN on August 6 and 7 at 6:00 p.m. Participating schools and programs include Union City Music Project; UpBeat NYC; Orchestrating Dreams; Harmony Program; Corona Youth Music Project; Chamber Music Center of New York; BridgeMusik; and Harlem School of the Arts.

Mozart: Duo for violin and viola No. 1 in G major, K.423
Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra violinist Sophia Kessinger and Principal Violist Shmuel Katz perform a Mozart string duo featuring two dancers premiering new choreography from Troy Schumacher of New York City Ballet and Ballet Collective.

Louis Langrée leads members of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra with two staples of the classical repertoire: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Mozart’s Divertimento for Strings in D major.

The week-long residency culminates in a concert on the Damrosch Stage featuring Mozart’s first and last symphonies with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, conducted by Renée and Robert Belfer Music Director Louis Langrée. A major component of the MMFO’s collaborations with schools across the City of New York was preparing students to perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 1—composed when Mozart himself was merely 8 years old—and this performance will feature select students from the ongoing partnerships with participating schools, performing alongside Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra musicians. The Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra will conclude the performance with Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony.
